Christ's College Finchley

MyZone is an enrichment programme which takes place every Wednesday afternoon in Christ’s College Finchley and involves all students in the school.

MyZone was introduced in 2011, and gives all students from Years 7-13 the opportunity to experience a range of different activities that they would not be able to access through their usual lessons.

On a Wednesday afternoon, the normal school timetable is suspended and is replaced by a 60-minute long session during which over 51 different activities are organised by current members of staff or outside groups who are often brought into school to offer an alternative programme. Students are divided into permanent MyZone groups and, typically, spend half a term participating in each of these activities during the academic year.

This year (2015 – 2016), as it was last year, students in years 8-12 were able to choose which activities they wanted to join. This meant students were able to select the activities which interest them as well as which ones would be enriching and awarding for them.

The range of different activities is huge and encompasses sports clubs, cultural groups, creative workshops, CV and interview skills, Finance and social development to name but a few.

For budding artists and those who enjoy creativity there is the choice of activities such as Tie-Dye, Promo gift maker, Lasering and Model Making. For the more scientifically or technologically minded activities such as STEM Club, Coding and game making and Science club may be of interest. If it is sport which you enjoy, then multiple activities such as Sport Nutrition, Football Fever and Weightlifting are on offer.

Further up the school, students are learning more practical skills such as Finance, self-defence and cooking on a budget whilst basic first aid is being taught in Key Stage 3 and the Sixth Form. Students also get the opportunity to learn sign language, a valuable skill to have as a form of communication. Off-site, students are given the option to do kayaking, Golf and five-a-side football at the local Powerleague; there is also the opportunity to experience a taste of the world in stocks and shares. Many Year 12 students participate in the Model United Nations programme which is run by a team of volunteers from UCL and students who are not involved in this often choose to gain the IFS (Institute of Financial Services) qualification which gains them valuable skills in personal finance and financial service industry and is equivalent to 140 UCAS points.

In addition to all of these optional activities, MyZone is also the medium through which the school delivers some of its more statutory requirements: key stage 3 students are given a workshop about dealing with challenging situations, including bullying, which is led by the schools SENco; Key stage 3 students can study ‘Amnesty International’, looking into humanity and human rights across the world. Key stage 4 also cover ‘Sex and Relationship Education’ which forms part of our PHSE programme. For the Sixth Form, MyZone time is used to bring in a range of outside speakers and to manage all aspects of the UCAS application process.

During the external QAR Report of the school, which took place in March 2013, Christ’s College was praised for its excellence in ‘curriculum enhancement and enrichment’ and MyZone was a major contributor to this. The spiritual, cultural, moral and social education of students at CCF is one of the school’s strongest features and the Ofsted inspection, conducted in November 2013, highlighted MyZone as one of the key strengths of the school, noting that ‘the activities offered both out of school and as part of the ‘MyZone’ programme are warmly welcomed by students.’ MyZone is now an established and popular part of the curriculum at Christ’s College which is set to develop even further over the next few years.
